I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

In 1998, lonely New York wife Wally Winthrop (Cornish) becomes obsessed with the auction of items belonging to her namesake — American socialite Wallis Simpson (Riseborough), whose scandalous love affair with Edward VIII, then King of England, rocked the world in the late 1930s.

Review
A lot has been said about Madonna and her new film — about how bad and inept it is, as if it’s somehow worse than 99 per cent of the other movies released on a weekly basis. That’s right: up there with Showgirls. Let’s give the director a break here. W. E. is flawed, overlong and confused in its storytelling. But then, so was Andrea Arnold’s take on Wuthering Heights, which has seen nothing but raves since it, too, debuted at Venice this year. Where Arnold received the benefit of the doubt, Madonna took a beating. But in both cases there was a director with a story and a vision — and only one of them was taken seriously.

There are three levels on which to approach W. E., and the first involves the performances, by far the film’s best aspect. Andrea Riseborough is terrific as the pushy Simpson, as is James D’Arcy as the simple king who so soppily doffs his crown to her. While Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) mopes through the 1998 auction, flashbacks of Wallis and the soon-to-be King Edward VIII are well served by Madonna’s cast, who give W. E.’s world a plausible humanity. These bright young things are rarefied, but the actors don’t play it that way, which gives the first hour an unexpected energy.

The second level involves the direction. The nearest comparison to this film would be fashion designer Tom Ford’s A Single Man, which also featured billowing curtains and gorgeous homes as a backdrop to a story of compromised desires. But where Ford’s film kept things simple, Madonna’s goes all-out to complicate them. The subplot involving Cornish isn’t just clinically sparse, it’s superfluous and boring — imagine how grating Titanic would be if Cameron kept cutting back to Gloria Stuart’s Rose. On top of that, the film’s eclectic visual grammar never settles, reaching its nadir in a silly, Marie Antoinette-style scene involving Wallis Simpson dancing to the Sex Pistols.

The third level, though, involves the intent. It’s easy to dismiss Madonna as a tourist in the film world. But though it often fails, most glaringly in historical rigour (complicity between the couple and Hitler’s Germany is left shockingly unexplored), W. E. does have interesting things to say. Unusually for a fashion icon, it says something unfashionable, which is that the brash Simpson, far from being the villain of a dark day in British history, was the victim, trapped by the love of a needy husband. In the short term, this will see W. E. dismissed as a vanity project but, in the long term, history may well find it to be a fascinating comment on 20th century celebrity from the ultimate insider.

Verdict
An uneven study of a notorious love story, raised by some superb performances and nuances, but brought down by awkward direction.

The Haunted House of Horror (1968)

A horror gem from 1968 has just been released on DVD for the first time. Something of a guilty pleasure, the film show 'Swinging London' at it's height, with a group of youngsters having a spooky night in a creepy mansion and one of them ends up dead. The film is pretty naff but it does show a great deal of London in the 60's including some great shots of Carnaby Street. The acting, script and pretty much everything else is below par, but it's a visual treat for 60's enthusiasts. The Electric Banana aka The Pretty Things contributed to the soundtrack.

Just ordered my copy, can't wait to see the extras including the directors commentary.

One of the weirdest, trippiest films I've ever seen. London gangster, James Fox goes on the run after killing someone and takes refuge in reclusive rockstar Turner Purple's Notting Hill pad. The hardman gangster starts to unravel and merge with Turner.

Shot in 1968 but not released until 1970, this is known as one of the best British films ever, paving the way for later London gangster films such as 'Lock Stock' and 'Layer Cake'. The ending is very interesting.

Definately worth a watch (or 4)

OK, anyone else think trilogies usually end up a bit messy at the end? Paranormal Activity was so scary and raises more questions than answers in many ways. You have to watch the films backwards for it to make any sense.

The missing footage from the trailer adds to the intrigue. Were these scenes excluded for a reason? Is another film on the way? I hope so!!!

Managed to get a copy of the remastered/deluxe edition of George Michael's 1987 multi-million selling album 'Faith.'

It has 2 CDs, including the original album remastered and a second disc of b-sides and remixes from the time.

The DVD has a great interview from 1987 where GM discusses many things including the controversy over 'I Want Your Sex,' which was banned. Seems tame by today's standards!

The albums sounds very 80s and very Prince-inspired. I prefer Listen Without Prejudice and Older to the tracks on this, although 'Fantasy' is one of my favourite GM tracks and it's a B-Side!

Wish Madonna and Prince would release deluxe editions like this!

Prince '3121' The Movie

This leaked a few months ago and has since disappeared (as Prince videos online usually do!) It's the movie Prince worked on in 2005 just prior to releasing his '3121' album. Similar to his previous TV Specials (The Beautiful Experience, Love 4 One Another) it seems to be a series of music videos joined by a loose storyline.

Pity he never released this in some way as it looks really good. The '3121' period is probably my favourite of the last decade as it was creative and fun. It was rumoured to be released through his 2009 multimedia website www.lotusflow3r.com but it never happened. Apparently this was an updated version of the film with tracks from 'Planet Earth' but it was never made available. Come on Mr Nelson... release it!

Moby. Destroyed. Deluxe

Just released this week, I now have in my hot little hands said album. 3 disc set of the album 'Destroyed' plus a disc of new tracks, a dvd packed with videos and live clips and (only through Amazon) a live disc.

Well, the original album was only released a few months ago (or so it seems) so this deluxe edition seems a bit premature. Not that I'm complaining, but this whole culture of releasing 'Special Editions' or 'Deluxe Editions' shortly after the initial release has always seemed like a bit of a con to me.

Why not just release an ep or something separate rather than charging people for the same album twice. I'm not complaining but it just seems a tad unnecessary. I love remastered deluxe albums, with a bonus disc of remixes or rareties from that period as they are more compilation albums (see Dannii Minogue's re-issues for a good example fo how to do it).

Anyway, back to the album. 'Destroyed' is a mostly electronic, ambient album with a lot of instrumental tracks. A great late night album to chill to. The extra tracks are ok, more b-side material than anything else.

The DVD, however, is a treat. Featuring the videos from the album along with some competition winning videos and a short live set, the dvd is worth every penny. I really like the interview with Moby discussing the album.

Best tracks include the latest single 'The Right Thing,' 'After,' and 'Lie Down In Darkness.' There's nothing close to the classic 'Porcelain,' or 'In This World,' but it's better than 2009's 'Wait For Me,' as it's not as depressing.

Patrick Wolf Live in The Ritz

I first became aware of PW at the Hop Farm Festival this Summer where he played with Patti Smith. I bought 'Lupercalia' a few weeks later and was instantly struck by his powerful voice and traditonally eccentric 'Englishness' reminding me a bit of Alison Goldfrapp.

I managed to get a ticket to see the Lupercalia Tour at The Ritz in Manchester. An amazing venue, perfect for the small, intimate show I was to witness that night.

Not familiar with anything other than 'Lupercalia' I was intrigued to find out what his previous material would be like.

The stage was filled with unusual string instruments, harps, piano, horns... all sorts of wonderful looking things. Patrick strolled on in a red blazer and skinny black jeans and trademark fringe.

Over the next 90 minutes I saw an incredible musician who jumped from instrument to vocalist and back again at break neck speed. Nothing seemed impossible or an effort; not once missing a beat or step.

The songs flowed, all with a magical beauty that is rarely heard these days. The instruments were vital in the performance, the band having a synergy rarely seen. His in-between chatter was charming and sweet. Previewing a recently completed song he warned he would 'fuck up,' yet performed it perfectly.

A highlight was during 'Together' when he ventured deep into the crowd, no security in site, he literally joined the crowd and brought the song to a brilliant climax, showing no fear.

A combination of charisma, a voice that could blow off the roof, musicianship, a sense of visuality and bloody good songs made this one of the most exciting and moving shows I've ever seen. Rarely do performers open themselves so much to their audience at the same time as performing.

I left knowing I would be seeing PW again when he returns to town.

Darren Hayes causes a storm in Liverpool

I saw Darren Hayes last night on the first night of his 'Secret' tour in Liverpool. As usual, Mr Hayes was amazing. Surprising set list in many ways. Nothing from 'The Delicate Thing We've Made' and only 'Pop!ular' from 'The Tension & The Spark', which was disappointing but understandable in many ways.

Around 5 or 6 new tracks from 'Secret Codes & Battleships' were previewed, 'Talk, Talk, Talk,' 'Black Out The Sun,' Don't Give Up,' 'Stupid Mistake,' and 'Taken By The Sea,' all really good, some better than others obviously.

'Insatiable,' 'Strange Relationship,' 'Crush (1980 Me)' and 'Spin' from the his first solo album were included along with 'Hot Tub Blues' from the 'We Are Smug' project.

The rest of the show was made up of Savage Garden tracks, all the biggies! 'Truly Madly Deeply,' 'Break Me Shake Me,' 'I Want You,' 'To The Moon & Back' and 'I Don't Know You Anymore.' Even 'The Animal Song' got its first airing in 12 years.

The set and costumes were all related to the latest album; balloons, ships and birds, all really unique looking. He entered the stage holding a umbrella which was glowing purple inside for 'Taken By The Sea'. At one point 2 screens were brought on stage and backlit so you could see him applylng make up. When he emerged, he was wearing neon stripy sunglasses and holding a cane for 'Pop!ular' which was a mash-up with 80s boyband Bros.' 'When Will I Be Famous?'. He removed the glasses to reveal white Harlequin make-up. This and the following song were quite camp and theatrical and I don't think the audience knew what to make of it. Personally, I loved it!

A natural and mature performer, Darren gets better over time. He seems a lot happier and energetic.

I can't wait to hear the new album, 'Bloodstained Heart' really stood out to me as a great track.

If you get chance to see him, GO!!!

The cult classic psychedelic film from 1968 starring Jane Birkin of 'Blow-Up' fame with a soundtrack by George Harrison. An eccentric professor finds a hole in his wall allowing him to see into his neighbour's flat. What he sees is a psychedelic world of modelling, sex, drugs and parties. Featuring art direction by The Fool (the art collective who worked with The Beatles during their psychedelic period) the film perfectly captures the revolution of in fashion and sexual attitudes of the late 60s in London. The lonely professors becomes obsessed with his model neighbour (Birkin) and her colourful world, contrasting with his bland, colourless world.

The DVD doesn't feature many extras other than the trailor and background/cast info. Although the story doesn't really go anywhere, some of the scenes are confusing and the Indian ragas can be a bit overpowering, the film is intrigueing, showing the change from old to new that the 60's brought about.

I had to pay £15 for my copy, it seems to be quite rare. Definately worth getting a copy if you have any interest in 60's psychedelia.

Had a wonderful Christmas so far. Came home last Wednesday to help organise the food and presents. Hectic! As always, Christmas Eve was special. A few family visits and last minute shop later, we were home watching TV together. 'The Holday' was on, I'm not normally one for romcoms but this one was quite good. Missed the end so ordered the DVD. I gave the 1968 Psychedelic movie 'Wonderwall' a viewing. As with most psychedelic 60s movies, it didn't make much sense. George Harrison's soundtrack was a bit much, very Indian. The storyline was paperthin, the only thing saving the film was the fantastic imagery by The Fool. It really captured the time.

Inception

Mind melt. It makes sense and then gets complicated. I happen to like a film that makes you think and lets you draw your own conclusions. A dream within a dream is an interesting concept and makes you think about what dreams really are.

The Omen

Classic horror from the 70s. Eerie in the extreme.

Prince “20TEN” 2/5

So-so follow up to last year’s “Lotusflow3r” triple album. The dark, psychedelic tracks that made up Lotusflow3r are replaced with poppy, upbeat tracks that lack emotional depth and that try to recreate the early 80s ‘Minneapolis Sound’ of albums such as 1999 and Purple Rain. Prince misses the mark with this one.

Not a terrible album, “Walk In Sand” is a gorgeous ballad with a great hook. “Sticky Like Glue” is a quirky funk track that harks back to Parade. The main thing missing is the dark edge of his early work. The “we all need to get along” sentiment doesn’t ring true and isn’t that interesting. Personal and religious changes to Prince’s life are represented here, which in turn, make the music less exciting and doesn’t really re-capture that early style.

Goldfrapp's new album ...yay or nay?

Early reviews aren't encouraging. 'Rocket' isn't exactly setting me a light so I don't expect much from the 80s synth rock influenced album but I'm looking forward to seeing them live this year. Re-inventing herself into an 80's character isn't original this time. Madonna beat you to it with 'Hard Candy' and the Sticky & Sweet tour's 80s nostalgia. Sorry Alison, you'll have to try harder next time!

Shutter Island Review *****

The best thriller I've seen since David's Fincher's 'Zodiac.' Gripping drama, brilliantly acted and played out. A twist in the tail that you don't see coming. Gonna try and get a copy of the book, can't wait to get the DVD and notice all the clues.

Another film I recently enjoyed was 'The September Issue.' Expecting something like 'The Devil Wears Prada' I was surprised at Ms Wintour's character. Not caustic, simply detached and unemotional. Being the editor of the World's biggest magazine is a big job, something's gotta give, right? Anyway, the film makes me wanna work at a fashion magazine even more. Pipe dream.

Madonna - Sticky & Sweet Tour DVD+CD

A trailor for Madonna's new live release has just appeared online. A behind the scenes documentary is included in the extras. Shame the original live vocals have been replaced but at least it's getting released and the live cd will get hammered in my car. Still got mixed feeling with this tour. Both times I saw it live were amazing, a totally enjoyable, euphoric experience. Watching it back though, I dunno... Hopefully the next tour will be magic!

Lady Gaga - The Remix Japanese CD

A new Lady Gaga CD from Japan "The Remix" has just been released. Featuring 16 remixes of tracks from The Fame/The Fame Monster. Usual electro stuff, a few nice little mixes though. Loving Space Cowboy's mixes of 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face.' Seems she's gonna go far. Just hope she doesn't exhaust herself with all the tour dates and appearances. Don't want to over expose yourself early in your career. I think she'll work through any backlash she gets though. Gaga's a tough cookie.

The whole Gaga vs. Madonna thing is weird. Both are similar women/artists, too similar to list but it seems people are writing Madonna off as a 'has been' as Gaga has taken her place. Well, I love them both and don't think either of them are going anywhere anytime soon.

Prince Cause N Effect: verdict

Big hype for a new Prince song. All the fans were drooling over the 20 second preview clip. A minute or so into the airing on a local Minneapolis radio station, many fans were turned off though. On first listen, 'Cause & Effect' seemed like a mish-mash of one too many musical ideas. Slighty cheesy 'Hey' chants may have put people off. On further listens though, I've grown to love the track. It's not perfect but I like most of what I hear, there's a ferociousness in there. Hopefully we can expect a new album from Prince later this year.

The lack of content on www.lotusflow3r.com still disappoints and frustrates me. It's not about the money, it's just a wasted opportunity in my opinion. What coulda been...

Mainly performing at his Glam Slam nightclubs in Minneapolis and LA, the Jamie King led group performed new Prince material. "Welcome 2 Erotic City" featured Mayte performing to "Pheromone" amongst other tracks in the VIP section of Glam Slam. OK, I've was never a fan of The Beatles. I knew their songs, I sang them as a child at school but it never developed into anything. Until the other week, that is. Watching some documentaries on BBC2 showed me how much their music changed the world and what amazing musicians they were.

od. Absolutely amazing. 'A Day In The Life' has to be one of the greatest pieces of music ever made.

I went on a sort of pilgrimage yesterday. I live 20 minutes away from Liverpool and felt like going to see some of the infamous landmarks.

We started at John Lennon Liverpool airport where the Yellow Submarine and John Lennon statue is.

Strawberry Fields is a mysterious, magical place. The strawberry red gates keep the magic locked in. It was fascinating to see the place that inspired 'Strawberry Fields Forever' that was a part of John Lennon's childhood.

Around the corner on Menlove Avenue, is John Lennon's childhood home. A fairly non-descript house, Mendips is the place where it all began.

A bit further down the road is Penny Lane. A Busy shopping area. All the landmarks from the song are still there and within lose proximity of each other. The barber's shop, the bank, the shelter in the middle of the

roundabout and the fire station.

We didn't get to Eleanor Rigby's grave or Paul McCartney's house but we will.

Madonna - The Ultimate Hits Collection 1983-2009

At long last, a hits compilation of all Madonna's greatest hits along with a few fan-favourites. Only thing that mars this collection is the bad editing on 'Erotica' and a few other songs. It's a pity that this will be left as a part of Madonna's musical legacy with bad editing and typos on the artwork. This would never have happened 15 years ago. The DVD quality is also said to be below par. Sad.

The only thing to do is overlook the errors and mistakes and enjoy the music that has been a huge part of my life and remember why I love her so much.

Had an amazing time Tuesday night. Madonna live at the MEN, first time seeing her on home turf. Original seats were at the very back of the arena, at the top... not impressed! Luckily production requested I moved to the side, near the front. Amazing view!

Show was incredible, better than Cardiff last year. M was relaxed and having fun and the crowd were up for it. New songs and costumes made the show even better.

Another night to remember!

Watched 'Man On Wire' on Friday... incredible story. Pascal Roge's "3 Gymnopedies: Gymnopedie No.1" is used throughout the film and is quite possible the most beautiful and moving piece of music I've ever heard.

CD3: Bria Valente "Ellixer" 3/5

1. Here Eye Come 4/5

Cool track, I liked this one from the website a while back. Nice laid back R&B vibe. Bria's voice suits this style.

2. All This Love 4/5

Funky Jazz track, great vocals and melody. Probably would work well live.

3. Home 3.5

Like the music to this one, quite different for Prince. Melody's ok, nothing special.

4. Something U Already Know 2/5

Not very memorable. Actually, can't recall how it goes. May get better after a few listens?

5. Everytime 3/5

Hmmmm... not sure. A bit bland except for the "phantom of the opera" melody bit. Hate the cheesy outro with a passion!!! Bad choice for lead-off single imo.

Funky dance track, makes me wanna groove, not exactly a great track but nice tempo change from what's come before.

Downloaded this from iTunes ages ago, really love this track. Very MPLSound, funky melody.

From Tamar's unreleased album, ok, nothing special. Won't compare who did the best version!

Overall a so-so album but not as dreadful as many are making out. I like late-night listening to laid back jazz/soul... this will fit in with that. Bria needs to come out and stand behind this album regardless, does she care about it?

Hmmm.... not my favourite song. Reminds me of something he would have recorded during the dodgy NPGMC days or a B-Side. Pretty naff melody, music's ok but nothing special. Ususally skip this one.

2. Chocolate Box 4/5

Hated this at first, seemed a bit cheesy but has REALLY grown on me. Love how it gets darker as it goes along. Musically brilliant, lyrics are pretty cool too! Nice to finally hear Q-Tip on Prince track.

3. Dance 4 Me 5/5

Best track on the album, funky as hell and makes me wanna dance! Camille voice is back and works.

4. U're Gonna C Me 4/5

Hated this on the "One Nite Alone..." album, but this version is loads better, really developed and has a great melody.

5. Here 4/5

Very 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic' R&B sounding but works. Nice instrumentation.

Thought this was a bit naff at first but has grown. Love the music, sounds unlike anything else he's ever done.

Prince Lotusflow3r Review

OK, here's my 2 bob's worth...

CD1: Prince "Lotusflow3r" 4.5/5

I had high expectations for this cd, was Prince finally gonna bow to his fans wishes and release a proper 'rock guitar' album? Apprantly, some of the tracks date back to the "3121" album sessions. Good news, seeing as that was my favourite CD since "The Gold Experience." Knowing that Michael B. and Sonny T. were back was hopeful.

I logged on to www.lotusflow3r.com on the launch date, paid my $77 and accessed the new music...

1. From The Lotus... 4/5

Reminded me of the outro to 'Dolphin' on The Undertaker film. Very psychedelic.

2. Boom 5/5

Gorgeous melody and vocals from Prince. Great guitar work, only thing that ruins it is the abrubt ending.

3. The Morning After 3/5

Opening has a very 60's feel, the harpsicord reminded me of The Doors. Slightly cheesy melody, but somehow fits the albums style. OK, but not great.

4. 4ever 3.5/5

My least favourite from the tracks that were previewed a few months ago. Again, slightly cheesy meody, but enjoyable non the less.

5. Colonized Mind 4/5

A grower. Wasn't taken by it at first, but definately has grown on me. I can imagine it is amazing live. Lyrics are very good also.

6. Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful 5/5

Probably my fave track of the album. Liked this one from the NPGMC in '06. Very funky, great horn arrangement... cool!

7. Love Like Jazz 4/5

Love the music to this one... cute!

8. 77 Beverly Place 4/5

Another grower, seemed a bit out of place initially but works well. Can't decide if it has a Spanish or Italian feel to it.

9. Wall Of Berlin 5/5

My fave track from the preview, love the tempo change, lyrics, instrumentation... everything!

Funky Camille-esque track about ? Again, great horns and melody, will kick live!

11. Dreamer 5/5

Hendrixs' ghost... amazing guitar, amazing lyrics, amazing melody... another classic!

12. ...Back 2 The Lotus 5/5

Continuation of track 1... psychedelic music and strange unintelligible lyrics, ends the album perfectly.

Overall, a top album showing Prince is starting to really make great music again. Loads better and interesting than 2007's "Planet Earth" but not a pop and accessible as "3121". Can't wait for this to be played live.

Okay, here's the thing: I'm obsessed with 3121.

That era of Prince's career has to have been the most interesting since the 94/95 "Gold Experience" era. It all started with emails from NPGMC reporting about parties at Prince's LA 3121 mansion. Late nite jams filled with Hollywood's finest. Don't remember too much about set lists, but I was intrigued at the idea of Prince performing at his house.

Most of 2005 consisted of these reports. It wasn't until the album was released in 2006 that the whole concept made more sense. The "purple ticket" release party was shown on entertainment tonight, showing Prince's house and the party that was held. The album booklet contained pictures of the house and the song "3121" seemed to be the theme song, describing these parties.

3 years later, Prince has moved to a new address (77 Beverly Park) which has replaced 3121. There was talk of the new Lotusflow3r website containing a film from the 3121 parties but nothing has shown up yet.

Hopefully it will be up soon.

In the meantime, I've got 3 new cds to enjoy!

Easter Weekend

Went up to the caravan in Anglesey, Wales on Thursday night for a long weekend. Spent most of friday thinking it was Saturday.

Watched 'Man On Wire' about the wirewalker who walked between the tops of the twin towers in NY. Incredible that he didn't fall and die, insane! Best part of the film was the music used in the dvd menu, "3 Gymnopedies: Gymnopedie No.1" probably the most beautiful piece of music i've ever heard.

On Saturday I started to watch "Smokin' Aces," but found it a bit complex. Had a lie down whilst listening to Prince's "3121" album, still love that album.

Tried to get the folks to watch 'Zodiac," but they fell asleep 30 mins in.

Sunday was spent in the sun, still reading Dickens' "Nicholas Nickleby" got through a few chapters. After going for a walk, i watched "Grease." Forgot how much I love that movie, made me wish my High School was like that, fairground at graduation et al.

Drove home around 8 listening to Prince's new albums "Lotusflow3r" and "MPLSound". Glad to hear them on CD as opposed to iPod. Got in just before 10. Was really tired but decided to watch "Supernatural" whilst looking on the net. Decided to set up a myspace to promote myself as a designer.

Had weird and very vivid dreams all night, kept waking up. Mostly about school, had people spreading vicious rumours about me, forcing me to confront them. Also Barak Obama was at my old school as i drove past so i stopped by and my best friend from school was paraletic. Also had a stroppy friend driving me home, telling me how i was an inconvenience! Wonder what it all means! very strange and quite depressing.

Decided today would be clean and tidy day. Put on "Vogue" to get me motivated and started cleaning my room. Listened to a few House compilations whilst cleaning to help me along.

Gonna chill the rest of today.
